Jacques Cartier, intrepid explorer
A master navigator, Jacques Cartier explored the Gaspésie during the summer of 1534. At the spot where he first met Indians, he erected a cross in honour of the King Francis I of France. Thanks to this fearless explorer, France was able to colonize the territory that would become New France some 75 years later.
